Hello,
Mental illness is something I have lived with my entire life and whilst I have not always felt it was a problem I certainly do now. I suffer from psychosis and anxiety. To put it more bluntly, I experience hallucinations and I have trouble leaving my own home at times. Recently my condition worsened and I am now unable to work due to the development another, as yet, un-diagnosed condition.
Feeling isolated is relatively common among those with conditions, and I am no exception to the rule. However as many of you probably already know, Mental Health is not uncommon. In fact statistics show that Mental illness is on the rise, which calls for action to be taken. I live in England and I've met with a number of people with various concerns and the thing that always strikes me is how 'normal' these people are. Of course they are normal. Everyone gets sick. However people are judged everyday for something that is out of their control. Personally, i would like to see a world where mental health is as easy to discuss as a broken arm.
We are all different in our personalities. So why are people being marginalized for a condition? You wouldn't judge someone for breaking their arm? Yes, I hallucinate. Yes, I have random panic attacks. Yes, I sometimes struggle to speak in full sentences due to my stammer. Does this define who i am? I do not think so. For the record, i am an excellent dancer. Now that is a defining characteristic.

Thank you so much for sharing Jack! I really understand where you are coming from as I struggle with depression and anxiety. Mental Health is a tricky topic for many to discuss but I hope you feel safe to discuss things here. I have seen many judge and get judged. My theory is those that cannot understand judge. What are your feelings on that? Elliott

Personally I am unsure. When it comes to Mental Illness I have found that is not only the sufferer that is impacted. For many years I struggled to talk about my problems with my mother. It is hard to explain something to someone when they have not experienced it themselves. An example is breaking an bone. I have never broken a bone in my life, the worst I have done is sprain one. Whilst |have seen people with broken bones it is not quite so simple to put yourself into their position. When it comes to Mental Health it is even more difficult to sympathize. How can someone understand when they can't even see the effects it is having on someone. I think sites like this are a brilliant resource. It allows people to express themselves in a safe environment. I try to create the same feeling on my blog. Trying to explain an anxiety disorder to someone who is a musician for example, can be incredibly difficult. Sites like this on the other hand provide a place for people to speak. Learning to write down the symptoms and emotions helps those that suffer get some weight off their shoulders, and at the same time it provides a useful guide for people who do not suffer to get a greater understanding.
In my opinion, people that judge anyone else based on Mental health, Race, Religion etc, is simply ignorant. Now i do not mean that in a negative sense, I simply mean that the information has not reached them yet or they are unable to understand at this point. For this reason it is important for those with conditions to speak up. The world can change its perspective, we see this all throughout history. It just takes a little effort.

I really like your comparison here and your points are very important! It really is hard for those on the outside of us to really see and fully comprehend what we are feeling on the inside. I love reading your input!! Keep it up!

Hello again, sorry it has been a while, I've been working on my blog and got a little tied up. I thought I might ask you all to share some of the stranger symptoms that come with your condition. I recently wrote a story for 'The Mighty' about the Physical effect of anxiety. Since then I've begun to wonder if other mental conditions have symptoms that most people are unaware of. I'll leave a link to my article below, but I'd like to provide a couple of examples here. Anxiety is often considered as a condition that mostly effects the mind. Aside from the usual 'fight or flight' physical responses little is mentioned about the other potential symptoms. For me, my anxiety manifests in physical pain. At times when i'm under extreme stress I get chest pains that are painful enough to put me on my knees. My stomach flips and knots and I am left dry-heaving. Strangely, when these physical symptoms get particularly bad, i forget about my anxiety. All of my attention is focused on just trying to stay upright. it is rare for me to have both the stereotypical anxious thoughts and the physical symptoms at the same time. The thoughts discourage me to do things, but the pain forces me to stop. Does anyone else experience this? Are there any other mental conditions with unspoken symptoms?
